Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Calle Schlettwein, has reiterated the need for the Windhoek municipality to accelerate plans to expand its water reclamation capacity to meet the growing demand.
The minister said this amidst challenges including slow filtration through fine sand filters, experienced at the City’s Goreangab Water Reclamation Plant over the years.
The City of Windhoek’s annual water consumption stands at 26 million cubic meters.
The minister made these remarks while attending a Water Week Conference in Cairo Egypt.
The demand for water in Windhoek has increased exponentially over the years, surpassing the weekly target of 422,877 kiloliters required to save at least 10% due to water scarcity.
In October, the city’s actual water consumption reached 516,556 kiloliters, surpassing the allowed limit.
