B2Gold says it has been unable to find profitable gold at its Otjikoto mine despite exhaustive efforts and thorough exploration.
The inability to pinpoint lucrative gold deposits has prompted a reevaluation of the operational viability of the mine, situated in the north-central region of Namibia, approximately 300 km north of Windhoek, and holding the title of the country’s largest gold producer.
B2Gold’s board chairperson Dr. Leake Hangala, shared this sobering news during a media engagement on Monday.
Hangala shed light on proactive steps, where individuals expressed interest in selling Exclusive Prospecting Licences (EPLs) for exploration.
However, the response remained consistent: “There is no farm there that we have not looked at, and if there is gold that we missed, we will be very happy for you to bring it to us.”
Discussing potential opportunities for underground mining, Hangala underscored the non-renewable nature of minerals and the sophisticated equipment required for modern underground mining.
