Hydrogen has the potential to live up to its promise as a low-emission fuel, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
In its latest Global Hydrogen Review 2023 report, the IEA acknowledges that low-emission hydrogen production could significantly expand by 203.
The report reflects the IEA’s assessment of developments in the field of hydrogen production.
It also highlights challenges hindering widespread deployment due to cost considerations.
Timur Gul, the agency’s chief technology officer, noted a rapid global increase in announced projects for low-emission hydrogen production.
“If all projects are realised, annual production of low-emission hydrogen could reach 38 metric tonnes by 2030, with 17 metric tonnes in the early stages of development,” Gul stated.
The report reveals that the potential production by 2030 from announced projects is 50% larger than initially projected in the 2022 Global Hydrogen Review.
