Hundreds of unemployed graduate teachers staged a peaceful protest on the streets of Rundu yesterday demanding employment from the government.
The group that gathered at the office of the director of education in Kavango east yesterday was frustrated at the lack of teaching opportunities in government schools blaming the Ministry of Basic Education for poor planning.
They handed over a petition in which they claimed that between 2017 and 2023, approximately 8,251 qualified teachers had no jobs in Namibia.
This number is expected to increase with an estimated addition of over 3,000 graduate teachers countrywide.
The group claimed that there are about 3,410 unemployed qualified teachers in the two Kavango regions.
David Nekaro, the chairperson of unemployed teachers in the two Kavango regions, expressed concerns while petitioning the Kavango East director of education, Christian Shilima, stating that the directorate has failed the country in various aspects.
