The Ministry of Basic Education has revealed that the N$200 million earmarked for the recruitment of unemployed teachers has already been utilised.
Responding to protests by hundreds of teachers who decry what they perceive as a teacher unemployment crisis, the ministry’s executive director Sanet Steenkamp said over N$200 million has already been spent during the current financial year across all 14 regions to recruit teachers.
Steenkamp, however, expressed disagreement with protestors’ claims that the ministry has inadequately addressed the situation.
She acknowledged the challenges faced by graduates seeking employment but cited financial difficulties.
Steenkamp emphasised that the ministry does not shy away from engaging with teachers to share their understanding and actions taken. She strongly condemned accusations that the ministry has failed to provide employment.
