Owners of shebeens and casinos in the Oshana region will be granted permission to operate during the forthcoming festive season, marking a departure from the tradition of prohibiting the sale of alcohol on Christmas.
This was announced by Oshana regional Police commander, Naftali Lungameni Sakaria this week.
Lungameni said the liquor establishments will only be allowed to operate in accordance with their trading licences.
He raised questions about the rationale behind serving alcohol during regular working hours while restricting it during public holidays.
The Commissioner shared these insights during the launch of the Oshana Police Force Festive Season Operation on Sunday, 3rd December 2023, in Oshakati.
Reflecting on the past two years of his tenure as commissioner, Sakaria revealed that local business owners had sought clarification on whether they could operate during the festive season.
This uncertainty prompted him and his team to scrutinise the regulations governing the operation of liquor outlets during festive seasons.
