Crop farmers in the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) and specifically in regions such as Oshikoto, Oshana, Omusati and Ohangwena are battling various challenges as they kick off their ploughing season following good rainfall.
While the precipitation has prompted farmers to commence ploughing, the readiness of oxen and donkeys, along with seed availability, presents a dilemma.
According to the Headman of Omangundu B village in Oshikoto, Martin Elago, communal farmers are eager to plough, but they face obstacles.
Elago noted that some farmers are waiting for government tractors for assistance as the oxen and donkeys they rely on are suffering from starvation and therefore unfit for ploughing.
