Numerous local farmers engaged in horticulture face challenges accessing markets for their produce due to a failure to register with the Namibia Agronomic Board (NAB), which acts as a connecting belt between farmers and the market.
This is according to NAB’s Manager for Horticulture Market Development, Emilie Abraham.
Abraham was responding to concerns raised by some local small scale farmers that they have no access to a market despite producing tons of produce.
Simon Nekandu, a local small scale tomato farmer, last week narrated how they would go for prolonged periods without receiving orders for their produce during harvest season.
However, Abraham said farmers are experiencing difficulties in finding markets for their produce because they are not registered with NAB.
“NAB is the bridge that connects the farmers with the market. Without NAB’s awareness of local farmers’ produce, the challenges would persist,” she explained.
Horticulture traders are mandated to register with NAB, providing planting data that enables the board to regulate border activities.
