Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform Calle Schlettwein says advice by the Landless People’s Movement encouraging generational farm workers on the verge of eviction in Omaheke region to grab unoccupied farms is unlawful.
Schlettwein was responding to a letter by LPM’s Joyce Muzengua in which she urged him to intervene in the dispute between the concerned farmworkers and the Town Council of Gobabis over land.
The Gobabis Town Council had set January 31, 2024, as the deadline for the execution of the evictions, citing provisions in the Public and Environment Health Act of 2015, specifically section 59, subsections (h) and (d).
In protest, farmers staged a demonstration on Thursday.
