Despite the government’s decision to eliminate the value-added tax on sanitary pads, with the exception of tampons, many girls living in rural areas and those from low-income households still find it difficult to access these basic necessities.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Finance issued a stern warning to retailers and wholesalers still imposing value-added tax (VAT) on sanitary pads.

They were informed that failure to comply with the new directive, which abolished VAT on sanitary pads starting from January 1, would result in consequences.

The ministry emphasised that non-compliant businesses would be compelled to reimburse customers or face a court-ordered fine of N$8,000.
