Sophia Garises, the visionary behind the Sophia Soup Kitchen and Daycare (SSKDC) located in Otjimuise’s 8 De Laan township, says that the idea to establish the soup kitchen was born out of her own experience as an orphan.
Having lost both her parents by the age of eleven, Garises intimately understands the hardships of going to bed hungry, with limited options. This experience ignited her determination to create a soup kitchen, with support from her daughters, donors, and well-wishers.
SSKDC now provides meals for approximately 50 children on weekdays.
“Children receive dinner and sometimes breakfast, depending on food availability, alongside assistance with their schoolwork,” Garises explains.
