For a group of approximately 30 fishermen and women, it’s a high-stakes gamble to provide for their families by fishing in the forbidden waters of Goreangab Dam, located west of the capital, Windhoek.

Despite stern warnings issued by the City of Windhoek over the past two decades, cautioning against fishing in the dam due to water pollution rendering the fish toxic, these individuals find themselves at a crossroads, driven by desperation.

One such individual, Joseph Immanuel*, recounts the economic hardships exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the closure of his employer’s business and left him grappling for survival.
