The Windhoek Municipality faces an imminent threat of escalating water scarcity, with consumption rates soaring by 10%, rather than achieving the targeted 10% reduction.
This worrying trend could prompt the declaration of a more severe water scarcity category, potentially leading to a full-blown water crisis.
In June 2023, the City declared a Category C Water Scarcity, but officials warn that a shift to Category D could be on the horizon if the current situation persists, aligning with the council’s adopted Water Management Plan (2019).
