Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, has imposed a moratorium on the issuance of generation licences for export purposes.
Effective from March 5, 2024, this temporary suspension will last for 18 months or until the existing challenges within the transmission network are resolved, as announced by the Electricity Control Board last week.
The Board clarified that this pause was recommended as a measure by the regulator of the electricity sector.
It is important to note that the moratorium does not apply to all licensees who currently possess or plan to construct non-variable energy-generating plants, or variable energy-generating plants with battery storage solutions.
