Mines and Energy Minister Tom Alweendo has emphasised the urgent need for specific legislation to regulate the growing green hydrogen industry.

Speaking at the Namibia Green Hydrogen Forum in New York, Alweendo said the current legal framework lacks clear definitions for green hydrogen, a gap that could hinder the country’s competitiveness in global markets.

“Current laws lack the definition for green hydrogen in Namibia,” Alweendo said, stressing the importance of establishing rigorous standards to ensure credibility.

“”We don’t want a situation where anyone can claim to produce green hydrogen without adhering to recognised criteria. It’s crucial to define how ‘green’ the hydrogen is and what that looks like,” he said.
