Namibia imported 331,071 MWh of electricity in August 2024 as local power generation plummeted due to drought conditions, exposing the country’s heavy reliance on hydropower.
Several southern African countries, including Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, are grappling with the consequences of their dependence on hydropower for electricity.
Namibia generates over 75% of its local electricity from hydropower, while Zambia relies on it for more than 80%, and Zimbabwe also significantly depends on it.
