Cybersecurity firm Positive Technologies reports that public sector institutions in countries like Russia and regions such as Asia, Africa, and North America have become prime targets for cybercriminals.
The report, covering data from 2022 through mid-2024, reveals that ransomware remains the most common attack method, although its overall use has declined globally.
“Ransomware remains the most common type of malware used during attacks. At the same time malware is also becoming ever more unpopular in the public sector,” the report states, though the popularity of ransomware in the public sector is waning.
In the first half of 2024, successful ransomware attacks dropped by 4% from 2023 and 14% from 2022.
