The Namibia Marriage Council has identified high unemployment rates among men as a significant factor driving the increasing cases of gender-based violence (GBV) across the country.
Between January 1 and September 30, 2023, 8,076 GBV cases were reported nationwide, with 521 of these cases recorded in the Kavango East region, according to former Acting Regional Commander Eino Nambahu during the 4th Men’s Conference in Rundu.
Chairperson of the Namibia Marriage Council, Paulus Mbandu Hawanga, noted that financial instability among men often leads to frustration, which can manifest as violence within families.
Hawanga emphasised the potential of Namibia’s agricultural sector in addressing unemployment, highlighting the availability of land and the need to harness water resources for food production.
“The government can create employment, but it’s not enough for everyone, and we want men to have their own special skills in the agriculture sector. We have enough land and all we need is to bring more water to the surface and then we can produce more food,” said Hawanga.
