Namibians through their local authorities and private consumption together owe N$3.5 billion in water and electricity bills by the end of February 2025.

A chunk of this is unpaid water bills standing at N$2.4 billion as revealed by the country’s bulk water supply company.

On top of the unpaid water bills, the public and various institutions also owe NamPower, N$ 960 million with N$157 million written off as bad debts last year.

The supply of water and electricity is essential not only for household consumption but they are the epicenter of economic activities.

The two utility companies in their reports have not provided reasons for their higher defaulting rates, and The Villager E-paper is engaging various municipalities to understand.
