With Covid-19 statistics picking up sharply in Walvis Bay, health minister, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula has denied that the country is facing a major crisis that needs a new approach.
This is despite the minister announcing eight new cases of Covid-19 at the coast
According to the minister: Case Number 56, Case Number 57, Case number 58, Case Number 59, Case Number 60, Case Number 61, Case Number 62 came from Walvis Bay while Case Number 63 came from Swakopmund.
“You can not call it a crisis really. We cannot characterize it as a crisis but we have a hot-spot in Walvis Bay and in Swakopmund but especially in Walvis Bay. The reason why we are picking up so more cases is because our strategy is working. Most of them have one contact it simply means people are not adhering to means of self-prevention. Most of these cases are happening in households,” said the minister.
In the meantime, Eagle FM has earlier reported that Namibia’s 13 regions will migrate to stage 4 effective 6 July 2020, president Hage Geingob said Monday.
The move from states 3 to 4 comes even after the country’s Covid-19 figures have risen to 63 with 28 new cases reported during the past 7-day period.
Shangula has also denied claims by the Walvis Bay disaster risk management committee chairperson, Knowledge Ipinge that some people testing positive of Corona Virus were being sent home.
“Everyone who is being tested positive currently will be sent back home. Imagine how you are risking the lives of those family members who are being sent home,” said Ipinge.
