Despite the flurry of statements from political leaders in key government offices and parliament emphasising the importance of agriculture, the sector still continues to be hugely neglected in the national budget.

This year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reforms has described its budgetary allocation as “worrisome” in the face of a looming drought.

These concerns stem from the ministry’s assessment of the country’s ability to ensure national food security, particularly in light of the low rainfall received both domestically and in neighbouring countries from which Namibia imports cereal grains.

For the current financial year, the ministry has been allocated a budget of N$2.98 billion, covering both Agriculture and Land Reform (N$1,937,358,000) and Water (N$1.04 billion).
