Namibia has spent N$142 million on fruit imports in just nine months (April-December 2022), presenting a significant opportunity for local farmers and investors.
Tangeni Hangula, a fruit development officer from the Namibia Agronomic Board (NAB), revealed these import expenditure figures during a meeting with crop producers and tree seedling suppliers in the north-central production zone.
Hangula highlighted that the import expenditure was primarily for six types of fruits: apples, bananas, citrus, mangoes, avocados, and pawpaws.
Apples alone accounted for an import value of N$54.1 million, with 7,320.89 tons imported. Bananas followed, totaling N$40.4 million in imports, with 4,693.01 tons imported and no local production.
