The promotion and utilisation of indigenous seeds can enhance agricultural production and maintain crop species diversity to ensure quality food production for present and future generations in the SADC region.
This is according to SADC seeds coordinator Tilabilenji Phiri who expressed the need for African states to promote the utilisation of indigenous seeds emphasising their resistance to diseases and conditions that destroy crops and affect agricultural output.
Phiri said this can be achieved through the National Plant Genetic Resources Centre (NPGRC).
He expressed these sentiments during the official launch of the Sharukwe Community Seed Bank project, which took place on Thursday in Sharukwe village, Ncuncuni Constituency, Kavango West region.
