Namibia has the potential to produce over 800 tons of avocados annually for the local market, potentially saving over N$16 million currently spent on avocado imports each year.
This insight comes from a 2024 Market Intelligence Report by the Agronomic Board of Namibia.
The report highlights that Namibia does not currently produce avocados for commercial purposes, relying heavily on imports to meet the growing local demand.
To reduce these imports, the Board has assessed the country’s capacity to cultivate its own avocados, particularly the green skin varieties such as Hass and Fuerte, which are the most commonly imported.
The report also suggests exploring other varieties like Pinkerton, Lamb Hass, and Reed, which are less vulnerable to heat.
