Namibia continues to grapple with its vulnerability to rainfall for food production, as revealed by the latest agricultural data.
In 2022, the carst recorded the highest white maize production at 29,842 tons, with a significant 46% relying on rainfed methods.
This underscores the country’s ongoing challenge to de-risk itself from rainfall dependence in food production.
Namibia has 1,008 registered farmers who collectively planted 32,127 hectares, of which 26,371 hectares were rainfed, and 5,756 hectares were irrigated.
The figures highlight the significant role rainfall plays in agriculture, particularly in a country currently combating another drought that has left small-scale farmers reporting low harvests and battling hunger.
