Agriculture and Land Reform Minister Carl Schlettwein says there is a need to subsidise farmers against losses to build the agriculture sector’s resilience to drought.

He said this in Omaheke this week during an engagement with communal and commercial farmers.

“Farmers need subsidies to solve that problem. You cannot say that agriculture is the mainstay of the economy and then underinvest in it.”

According to the minister, the sector needs to attract budgetary allocations from state fiscus and private investment as well.

He said this, acknowledging the effects drought has had on the sector, particularly hampering some potential successes in terms of penetrating new markets.
