Ondangwa lies in Owambo in the north of Namibia. It is a small town that exists mainly on the main road running through the centre. There are markets, businesses as well as new shopping centres along the road. It is a curious mixture of old and new, rural life and modern life clinging to the main arterial route in the area. Oshigambo is an area about half an hour from Ondangwa, it is one of the many and typical areas/villages that dot the landscape. It is home to one of the better schools in the north, Oshigambo High School. Gr 8 – Gr 12. Ms Toini Junias teaching her class English.

After leaving high school, Namibian pupils prefer to study education rather than any other courses in their first years at university, a phenomenon that has contributed to the overproduction of teachers who cannot find jobs.

Last week Minister of Education, Anna Nghipondoka advised high school graduates to refrain from pursuing further studies in education, especially for lower primary school teaching because the market was saturated with a huge number of teachers with less employment opportunities.

Data provided by the University of Namibia shows that the Faculty of Education and Human Sciences was the most sought-after among potential students during the 2022 and 2023 academic year leaving high school.

For example, the university enrolled a total of 28,412 students in 2022, with 15,211 opting for the Faculty of Education & Human Sciences, with 9,795 of those enrolled in this faculty being female.

No other faculty surpassed the enrollment of 6,000 students in that year according to the data provided.
