The SADC Business Council Tourism Alliance has reassured tourists that despite the recent outbreak of monkeypox (Mpox) in certain parts of southern Africa, the region remains a safe and welcoming destination.
On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for the second time in two years.
In response, the tourism organisation highlighted the region’s swift and coordinated actions to address the situation, emphasising that the risk to travellers remains minimal.
Countries such as Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi have not reported any Mpox cases but have heightened surveillance and preparedness measures to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
