Opportunities for establishing an oil refinery in Namibia are still open, with interest from various parties, according to Petroleum Commissioner Maggy Shino. Speaking at the 2024 Mining Expo and Conference, Shino addressed questions from Eagle FM about the progress of a potential oil refinery in the country.
In May 2024, Iran, through its ambassador to Namibia, Seyed Ali Sharifi Sadati, announced plans to establish a refinery at Walvis Bay port as part of broader initiatives in the oil sector.
However, concerns have been raised about potential trade implications, given that Iran is currently under U.S. sanctions.
“The opportunity to establish an oil refinery in Namibia is open to anyone with the intention to do so, whether privately or through bilateral ventures,” Shino said.
