There are 653 schools in the country lacking electricity, 167 of these are in the Kavango East region.
The Mines and Energy Minister, Tom Alweendo, made the revelation during the official handover of the Shamundambo electrification project in the Mukwe Constituency last Friday.
At the same event, he reiterated that the govern ment has made a commitment to electrify approximately 26 schools in the Kavango East region that have been without power since their construction.
Alweendo said the identified schools will be connected to the grid by 2025. Rural electrification in Namibia currently stands at around 20%.
The minister revealed that the Kavango East region had only 3% of its villages electrified before
Namibian Independence, however, by 2011, this figure had increased to 20%.
