Zambian police said a bakkie that was carrying 38 prisoners overturned killing one and injuring 36 others on Saturday.
A statement issued by the Zambia police public relations officer, Esther Mwaata Katongo, said one prisoner escaped with no injuries.
According to Katongo, there were three warders including the driver on board the car.
“The total on board was 41,” Katongo said in the statement.
Katongo said the accident happened along the Masaiti-Mpongwe road near Mabando area in Luanshya – a town in the Copperbelt Province near Ndola.
Katongo said there were three warders in the car including the driver, who sustained head injuries while the other two were also injured.
All the injured, Katongo said, were admitted at Ibenga Mission Hospital in an earlier known as Masaiti.
