The Bank of Namibia is set to launch a commemorative banknote in honour of the late President Hage Geingob next month.
The bank noted that the special note will celebrate Geingob’s significant contributions to Namibia’s democracy, nation-building, and his legacy as the country’s third president.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the initiative and others questioning its broader implications.
Political analyst Ndumba Kamwanyah criticised the focus on honouring elite figures, arguing that such actions overlook the contributions of ordinary Namibians.
“Honoring only the elite does not promote unity and harmony,” he argued.
Kamwanyah suggested a shift in approach, advocating for the recognition of everyday citizens who have made meaningful impacts on society.
