The recently reopened Rundu Abattoir has recorded the slaughter of 632 cattle during August and September 2023, signifying increased demand for markets by Northern Communal Farmers.
The Rundu abattoir has been dormant since 2014 and since its N$40 million revival in August, farmers in the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) have jumped at the opportunity to market their livestock at the 120 cattle capacity abattoir.
Data from the Meat Board of Namibia shows significant promise in terms of livestock marketed in the NCA as a beef market segment.
For example, 1 752 cattle were processed at the Katima Mulilo abattoir during the third quarter of 2023.
Cumulatively, the total number of cattle slaughtered in the NCA stood at 2 384 in the third quarter of 2023.
This is a notable increase compared to previous months and years, especially considering the ample availability of beef raw materials in the northern communal areas, including Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Kavango East, and Kavango West regions.
