The ongoing drought has severely impacted tourism activities in southern Namibia, driving tourists to seek leisure elsewhere.

Last month, Simonis Storm Securities reported that the southern regions had the lowest occupancy rates in the country for July, at 56.5%, below the national rate of 59.7%.

Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) spokesperson Nelson Ashipala told The Villager that low water levels at the Hardap Dam have led to a decline in visitors to the Hardap Resort. Popular activities like fishing had to be discontinued.

“Employees at the resort say it’s the lowest occupancy they’ve seen in years,” Ashipala said, adding that water levels are now so low that fish skeletons are visible beneath the surface.
