Namibia’s energy sector is preparing to enter the next phase of market reform, which will allow eligible electricity consumers to import power directly by 2026.
This announcement was made by Tjama Tjivikua, Deputy Board Chairperson of the Electricity Control Board (ECB), during the Market Model Implementation Workshop for the Modified Single Buyer (MSB) model in Swakopmund.
Tjivikua said the country is currently in Phase 1B of the MSB market model, introduced in 2019 to liberalise Namibia’s electricity market and pave the way for greater private sector participation.
He emphasised that Phase 2, which will enable contestable customers to import electricity, is on the horizon but will only be implemented after a comprehensive review of the current phase.
