Residents of Tumweneni, an informal settlement in Rundu, Kavango East, are raising alarms over the felling of trees in their community, warning that it could endanger both food security and access to shade. Their concerns highlight a broader struggle between development needs and environmental conservation.

 

For Carolina Petrus, a resident of Tumweneni, the loss of a false mopane tree on her property was deeply unsettling.

 

The tree, which had provided her family with shade and food, was cut down by a community member without her father’s consent, she narrated to The Villager upon a visit last week Tuesday.
