Namibia has put in place more measures to contain the spread of coronavirus after president Hage Geingob declared a state of emergency on Tuesday.
Some of the measures are:
- a travel ban on people from Schengen States, China, Iran, Korea, UK, USA, Japan
- temporary travel ban on Namibians resident in other countries except for special occasions and with the health ministry’s permission. Special cases include i) medical treatment ii) humanitarian assistants iii) truck drivers bringing food etc.
- Even these will have to go through compulsory screening with quarantine where necessary.
- Ban on all business, social and leisure travel
- All Namibians from high infection countries will be subjected to supervised self-quarantine for 10 days.
- South African borders to remain open for visitors to exit and for Namibians to return and for trade.
- No public will be allowed at court proceedings
- There will be mandatory reporting of suspected Covid -19 cases from state and private facilities.
- There will no gatherings of more than 50 people for 30 days.
- Sport events, demonstrations and trade fairs postponed.
- Accommodation establishments must provide hand sanitisers and masks to all staff and educate visitors and establish the origin of travel.
- Training of staff on preventative measures.
- All service providers to provide water to the public in places.
- All shopping malls to put measures in place for enhanced hygiene at all times such as alcohol-based hand sanitisers and masks.
- Cosmetic industry implored to manufacture hand sanitisers.
