The Deputy Minister of Industrialisation and Trade, Verna Sinimbo, said the introduction of the 631 prefix by GS1 is a development that is far more than a simple technical modification.

Speaking at the launch, which took place on 18 July in Windhoek, Sinimbo defined the launch as a result of years of diligence, hard work, and collaboration.

“The launch of the National Bar Code system is a testament to our journey as a nation and embodies our collective resolve to make our mark as a country on the global stage,” added Sinimbo.

She stated that, during that period, Namibian-originated products were considered South African products in the international market.

Namibia has been utilising the South African Bar Code for many years, with the country to now have its own unique identity.

“While we take pride in our shared African heritage, there was always a yearning for an identifier that is uniquely ours, one that would truly reflect our individuality,” she said.

The launch evoked a strong of accomplishment by acknowledging the substantial progress the country has made since its independence.

Furthermore, it reflects Namibia’s economic resilience, marking its growth from a young nation to an influential player in global trade.

With the launch of the 631 prefix, the country now has a trademark, which is expected to identify Namibian goods and services in the international marketplace.

The advent of the bar code is deemed a recognition to every Namibian entrepreneur, manufacturer, and innovator who innovates and puts out local produce for both domestic and international consumption.

The three digits are also expected to bind the country’s products and services, and advance cohesiveness of local enterprise.

The deputy minister concluded by saying that it is a reaffirmation of the shared vision of citizens, a common aspiration to elevate Namibia to ever greater heights.

“With every product that carries the 631 prefix, we are not just selling a commodity; we are sharing a piece of Namibia with the world. Each item tells a story – of our land, culture, and people” the deputy minister said.

She says the celebration was not just an advancement in Namibia’s trade capabilities but a significant step forward in its collective journey as Namibians, for the 631 prefix is more than a code; it is a symbol of unity, resilience, aspiration, and pride.
