On Friday, Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, officially commissioned a new Dialysis Unit equipped with 15 hemodialysis machines at the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.
Shangula highlighted the long-standing need for renal dialysis services in the area, noting that patients had previously been required to travel great distances to access this vital treatment. He explained that, for many years, the government had to refer state patients to private facilities, leading to an annual expenditure of over N$100 million.
“Renal dialysis is a life-saving treatment for individuals with chronic kidney failure whose kidneys can no longer filter their blood effectively. Without treatment, the build-up of water, waste, and salt can reach dangerous levels, and if left untreated, it can be fatal,” Shangula said.
