The HyRail project is still in concept mode after seven months.

The dual-fuel hydrogen-diesel locomotives project, which was set to be fuelled by Namibian green hydrogen, was halted in September of last year.

The temporary suspension came after the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) and the Development Bank of Southern Africa approved TransNamib’s request for a N$2.6 billion loan to enable it to update its fleet and steer the firm towards its ambitions.

“As per the media release dated 11 September 2024 regarding the green hydrogen dual fuel locomotive project, TransNamib affirms that the project is still paused,” the executive commercial and marketing Kendall Swartz at TransNamib told The Villager.
