German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has expressed remorse for the atrocities committed by Germany during its colonial rule in Namibia between 1904 and 1908.
Steinmeier conveyed his regret while delivering a final tribute to Namibia’s late President, Hage Geingob, at the memorial service held over the weekend.
Geingob, who passed away on 4 February after battling pancreatic cancer, was laid to rest at Heroes’ Acre on Sunday.
Steinmeier commended Geingob for his courage in addressing Germany’s dark colonial past, particularly the genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama communities, in his outreach to the German people.
