Today, Namibians are casting their votes in a pivotal election to choose the country’s fifth President and members of the eighth National Assembly.

Over 1.4 million registered voters are expected to participate in what President Nangolo Mbumba has described as a “patriotic contribution to the consolidation of our democracy and the development of our motherland.”

After completing its voter registration in August this year, voter registration in Namibia fell short of expectations as only 91% of eligible voters turned up to register for the elections.

Despite several mobilisation efforts by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) and other stakeholders, not all eligible voters could be registered to vote in today’s election.

As such, the total number of registered voters (1,4 million) is 9% short of the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) figures, which indicated that about 1,6 million Namibians are eligible to vote in the November elections.
