Namibia recorded a trade surplus of N$264 million on food items after exporting N$1.7 billion worth of food, excluding live animals, while importing N$1.4 billion of the same.

The trade surplus was attributed to fish exports which stood at N$1.3 billion, which was mostly exported to Spain, Zambia and Italy.

Fish was also Namibia’s third highest trade surplus in January, recording a N$1.2 billion surplus behind non-monetary gold at N$1.8 billion and uranium at N$1.4 billion, respectively.

According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), ‘fish and other aquatic invertebrates’ contributed the highest to the food export basket with a share of 77.7% followed by ‘edible fruits and nuts’ with 11.5%. The top five exports from the total food basket had a share of 98.1%.
