Around 300 polling officials in Kavango East staged a peaceful protest on Sunday, demanding an increase in their daily training allowance from the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN).
The officials, drawn from constituencies including Rundu Rural, Rundu Urban, Mashare, and Ndonga Linena, threatened to boycott their duties if their demands were not met within 24 hours.
The group is requesting an increase in their daily rate from N$150 to N$300, citing financial challenges and dissatisfaction with the current arrangement.
Speaking on behalf of the group, spokesperson Peter Kamwi expressed frustration, stating that the polling officials were only informed of their contractual terms and payment details toward the end of their training.
Kamwi highlighted the economic struggles faced by many participants, particularly the unemployed youth. “We cannot even afford three meals a day, let alone pay for transport and accommodation to attend training sessions,” he said.
