The municipality of Otavi is grappling with a severe financial crisis due to widespread non-payment of taxes and service rates.
In response, the council has urged consumers to settle their outstanding debts or arrange payment plans to avoid service disconnections.
Otavi Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sakaria Haulofu told The Villager that the lack of revenue is hampering service delivery in one of the fastest-growing towns in the Otjozondjupa region.
As of the end of July 2024, individuals and businesses owe the municipality a total of N$75.4 million — an amount that surpasses what the town owes to its own service providers.
The Otavi municipality’s overall debt to service suppliers stands at N$65.1 million, with the largest amount owed to NamWater at N$62.9 million.
