The Namibia HyIron-Oshivela project has invested in a 26-megawatt solar plant to power its plans of producing green iron and start the decarbonising of the steel industry.

Built in just six months, the solar facility marks a critical milestone in the country’s decarbonization efforts.

According to project manager Johannes Michels, around 43, 680 panels on 25 hectares have been installed for what is now the second-largest solar plant in Namibia.

The facility will generate power to drive electrolysers producing green hydrogen, a vital input in the production of green iron.

“The solar plant is one of our largest investments, completed with speed and efficiency,” Michels said.

He emphasised that Namibia’s abundant solar energy and iron ore resources are the key factors making the project viable.
