Kirsty Coventry made history on 20 March 2025, by being elected as the new President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Coventry became the first woman and first African to hold the prestigious title. She is also the youngest (41) president since Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games.
Coventry, the former Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation in Zimbabwe, is the most decorated African Olympian of all time, with seven medals across five Olympic appearances between 2000 and 2016, paid President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah a courtesy visit at State House on Saturday morning.
During the visit, Coventry commended President Nandi-Ndaitwah for allocating part of the national budget specifically for the development of sporting infrastructure. “I want to say thank you very much [for the allocation]. Infrastructure is key to all of us at the Olympic movement in the development of sports across Africa,” Coventry stated.
