Residents of Extension 5 in Oshikuku, Omusati region, have been without potable water, toilets, and sewage disposal for nearly 16 years due to disputes over compensation arrangements for relocation.

A family in Oshikuku is at odds with the town council over the compensation offered for their communal land, which is earmarked for town development.

In an interview, family member Petrus Nengonya explained that their refusal to accept the compensation has left them without essential services.

He recounted that they lived in a shack on land allocated by their father, purchasing 20 litres of water for N$3.00 from a neighbour and using a nearby dry earth dam for sanitation.

“In 2007, the Oshikuku Town Council informed us to stop building any more structures in Extension 5 because the town had plans for industrial areas,” Nengonya said.

He noted that the issue has passed through the hands of several mayors without resolution.
