The Basic Income Grants (BIG) Coalition has called on lawmakers to start commemorating the World Food Day at dumpsites in a show of solidarity with hundreds of people who flok the dumpsites in search of food.
World Food Day is observed on 16 October annually, but in Namibia this year it was commemorated on Friday, 27 October in Kavango East.
The theme for this year was: ‘Water is Life. Water is Food. Leave no one behind’.
Rinaani Musutua of the Basic Income Grant, who made the call, said leaders should start visiting rubbish dump sites to witness the harsh realities that poor Namibians endure on a daily basis.
Musutua blelieves that leaders are completely oblivion on this issue of hunger and poverty especially for urban dwellers.
Namibia has experienced severe food insecurities over the past couple of years exarcebated by the prevailing drought.
