The tariffs imposed by the United States on Namibia may reduce the competitiveness of Namibian beef and fish exports in the US market, according to the International Relations and Trade Ministry.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump levied a 21% import duty on Namibian goods, citing the long-term downturn in US manufacturing as rationale.

Namibia has expressed concerns regarding the impact of these tariffs on Namibia’s key export sectors.

 

“The U.S. tariffs, while a response to trade imbalances, could undermine Namibia’s longstanding commitment to preferential access under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA),” says Penda Naanda, Executive Director of Namibia’s Ministry of International Relations and Trade.
